Gold Refining

Gold Sourcing

Smelting

We smelt by converting gold from its solid state or particles to liquid. Our Company accomplishes this by heating the gold with a mixture of chemical called flux which bonds with the contaminants and floats on top of the liquified gold. The flux-contaminant mixture (slag) is hauled away, leaving a gold precipitate. Once the process is complete, the smelter is left with a remarkably pure (AU) material. Smelting is primarily done to rid gold dore bars, ingots/nuggets off impurities and any foreign matter.

The first step of the smelting process involves processing the raw ore. The gold material is pulverized into fine particles. These particles are then placed into a furnace that has reached a temperature above gold’s melting point. This burns off many of the impurities found in gold but not all.

The second step involves the introduction of chemicals to separate the pure gold from other minerals and metals. The Chemical causes the melted gold to coagulate and form pure nuggets.

Once the gold ore and scrap gold have been refined, the gold is placed back into the furnace to be melted one more time. This pure gold is melted then poured into a mould to form ingots. Ingots are essentially gold bars and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. This pure gold can be used to make a variety of electrical components, jewellery or it can simply be used as a store of value.

Fire Assay

Fire Assay, also known as cupellation, is an age-old process and is about the main industry standard for precious metals assaying. This process analyses all of the lot or just a sample from a homogeneous melt of the lot. The whole product or just the sample along with silver is wrapped in lead foil and placed in a porous bone-ash cupel and melted. The lead foil pulls the base metals into the cupel leaving a gold and silver dore bead. After treating the dore bead with nitric acid to remove the silver, the remaining precipitate is dried and weighed to obtain the concentration of the precious metal. This is a time-consuming process and typically takes about 1-5 hours to complete depending on the quantity to be fire assayed.

Assaying

We source gold from both the large and small scale licensed Artisant mining organisations; mainly from and elsewhere on the East African sub Region, for either internal consumption or purchasing on behalf of (external) third party-buyers. These third party buyers contracts with us and commit funds to our Refinery to do the purchases (gold sourcing) in their stead, due to our expertise, our supplies sources network and diligence on the Kenyan and African market. We Form gold bars for onward supplies/exports to end buyers resident in Kenya and other jurisdictions in return for a minimal agreed commission on the transactions payable to Vexillum Refinery.
